Elementary
First Grade
In first grade we learn everything from printing and reading, to learning all about God’s Word. We also learn math concepts that you need for life, including measuring, liquid measuring, reading a thermometer, counting coins and money, telling time, and addition and subtraction facts. The children enjoy solving word problems and do a lot of thinking skills. If you can teach a child to think, they can learn anything!
In phonics we learn the sounds of all the letters and all the phonics charts. Reading, spelling, and phonics go together to make strong readers. We try to develop a love for reading by going to the library and also by reading and working on projects with our 3rd grade buddies. Learning is so much fun!
Eph. 4:32 is our class verse: “Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” Our motto is: “Anything less than your best is not good enough for God.”
We celebrate many special days and have class parties around holidays. A favorite is Western Day where we dress up like cowboys and cowgirls and we invite special speakers to come in and teach the students about the West.
We learn one verse each week. Wow! In a school year that’s a lot. God is so good; we emphasize the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
